It all started with a feeling and Facebook post.

I’m tired of feeling hopeless and helpless as I watch the moral fiber of our country crumble. Every side thinks they are absolutely right. So much so that we don’t even listen to each other anymore and we certainly don’t compromise. I’m just as guilty of this.

Social media allows a dangerous element of validation that negates any further dialogue. We share and re-tweet only the ideas that confirm our beliefs. We scroll past opposing views with a thumb speed chimps would envy. There is a very nefarious goal at the end of deliberately convincing us that the media reports fake news. This sets up a volatile environment that allows every single person to be right and everyone else to be wrong at the exact same time because facts are pliable now.

Social media is a powerful platform while simultaneously being extremely passive. It’s the norm to post a bitch about some outrage of the day, of the hour. We are a generation that runs through a litany of issues with the speed of light. We care for a fraction of a ‘share’ tap.

I used to wonder how the Holocaust happened. Now, before you all freak the fuck out, I’m not necessarily saying we are headed to another holocaust (yet), I’m merely illustrating my thought process. What teeny, tiny steps added up to the Final Solution? It didn’t happen from one day to the next. It was a process — a decision here, a blind eye there. Passive acquiescence leads to mob mentality.

As tensions and opposing views mount, I don’t have a solution. I don’t even think there is a solution, frankly. The only thing I am sure of, is that we can’t be passive anymore. While we meme each other to death, they are looting the castle, filling their pockets, and convincing us that it’s for our own good.

We can’t wait for the change, this is my call to action!

During these times of unrest, it’s easy to wish for a superhero to save us. It’s much harder to accept that isn’t going to happen. Each of us is capable and required to be the superhero you are waiting for.
