My husband does not watch Game of Thrones. I tried to explain the amazing sets, dragons, costumes, visual effects, giants, zombies (White Walkers), and character development but he wasn’t picking up what I was putting down. I played the nudity and sex card but he passed. He barely tolerates the Harry Potter movies so it was a stretch to try to get him interested in Game of Thrones. He just doesn’t like the fantasy genre.
He will watch the hell out of Narcos and Miami Vice reruns but disapparates like a wizard when he hears the GoT theme music. We have found common ground on several shows like Veep, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Friends, Big Bang Theory, After Life, and Hannibal but mainly we return to our corners for the shows we don’t agree on.
I got hooked on the show by accident. I think I may have caught pieces of some episodes here and there before starting over from the beginning and binged watched over two days of fasting and zero REM sleep. I emerged from my den bleary-eyed and slightly incoherent but completely caught up to that point.
The series is a rare occurrence where the production exceeds the books. As a bibliophile, I do not say that lightly. I tried reading the books but being a voracious reader did not matter for these stories best watched, not read. I read the first one and struggled to remember names, kingdoms, and lineages. It was a good read but I surrendered when I started book 2 and found all new names, kingdoms, and lineages. By now, I was already spoiled by the ease of watching the story so I gave up on reading it.
The first episode of the final season aired last night. I turned off all the lights, grabbed my sofa blanket, and settled on the couch in excited anticipation. My husband grabbed his laptop and beelined out of the room while exclaiming “Enjoy your porn!”
“It’s not porn! It’s a really good show! You should watch it!” I yelled at his back as the bedroom door slammed shut.
It was unfortunate timing when he came out for a drink while Bronn was being serviced by 3 naked prostitutes. Extremely unfortunate. Alright, jackass, I’ll give you that one.
It IS a great show, though!
